Duluth, Minnesota – Roads across northern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin could turn slick after 6 p.m. Tuesday as a prolonged mix of snow and ice moves in, setting up hazardous travel through at least midday Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Winter Weather Advisory takes effect at 6 p.m. Tuesday for Ashland and Iron counties in Wisconsin and for North Cass, South Itasca and northern Aitkin counties in Minnesota. Wisconsin advisories continue until 6 p.m. Thursday, while Minnesota counties remain under advisory until noon Thursday.
Minnesota locations including Grand Rapids, Walker and Hill City may see 3 to 5 inches of snow along with a light glaze of ice and wind gusts up to 45 mph. In Wisconsin, totals will reach up to 3 inches of snow and around one-tenth inch of ice, with snow favored in northern Ashland County and more icing south toward Iron County and the Bad River Reservation.
Gusty winds could down tree limbs and reduce visibility on highways such as U.S. 2 and Highway 169. Drivers should slow down and check 511 in Minnesota or Wisconsin for updates before traveling.
Hazardous conditions are expected to impact both Wednesday commutes, with slippery roads lingering into Thursday as precipitation continues.
