Ironwood, MI — A winter weather advisory is in effect across Michigan’s western Upper Peninsula with significant ice and snow expected through 8 p.m. Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, freezing rain and snow will begin Friday morning in Iron, Dickinson, Menominee, Gogebic, Ontonagon, and southern Houghton counties. Ice accumulation could reach a quarter inch by Saturday night, with some areas possibly receiving up to 6 inches of wet snow by the end of the weekend.

The advisory begins at 7 a.m. CDT Friday for counties including Iron Mountain and Menominee, while Ontonagon and Ironwood will see conditions worsen after 8 p.m. EDT Friday. The mixed precipitation may cause power outages, tree damage, and hazardous road conditions, particularly during Friday’s commutes and throughout the weekend.

Travelers are urged to drive cautiously and prepare for slick roads, especially overnight when icing is most likely. Residents should monitor local forecasts for updates as the storm system progresses.

Additional snowfall and icing are possible into Sunday, and temperatures will remain near freezing, increasing the potential for prolonged impacts.

Officials recommend staying indoors during peak icing hours and keeping emergency supplies on hand in case of power disruptions.
