New York, NY – The Upper East Coast is preparing for a stormy and colder Thanksgiving weekend as a potent front sweeps in from the Great Lakes, delivering rain, strong coastal winds, and the first widespread taste of winter chill. The change will arrive late Friday and linger through Sunday, complicating travel plans from New York City to Boston.
According to the National Weather Service offices in New York, NY, and Boston, MA, a coastal low will develop along the mid-Atlantic shoreline Friday night, deepening as it moves northeast. Widespread rain will spread north through Saturday, with 1 to 2 inches possible across Long Island, southern New England, and coastal Connecticut. Gusts may top 45 mph along exposed shores, producing minor flooding and rough surf.
By Sunday, much colder air will rush in behind the system, sending temperatures tumbling into the 30s and 40s. The cold northwest flow could bring scattered snow showers to interior areas of upstate New York and western Massachusetts by early Monday, while frost becomes likely across suburban and inland valleys.
According to the New York State Department of Transportation, travelers should expect slick stretches on I-87, I-95, and I-90 late Sunday as temperatures fall. Air travelers may also face delays due to wind restrictions at JFK, LaGuardia, and Logan airports.
