Mooringsport, LA – A rare earthquake rattled parts of Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas on Saturday, catching many residents off guard. The 3.5 magnitude quake occurred near Mooringsport, Louisiana, at a depth of 5 kilometers.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the tremor struck at 2:12 p.m. local time and was felt across the region. Shaking reports came from areas as far as Shreveport and parts of East Texas and southern Arkansas.
The earthquake registered a level IV intensity on the ShakeMap, indicating light to moderate shaking. This marks an unusual event for the Deep South, where seismic activity is relatively rare.
Experts believe the quake’s shallow depth contributed to its widespread effects, although no injuries or significant damage were reported. Residents described the tremors as brief but noticeable, with some comparing it to the rumble of a passing train.
Earthquakes of this magnitude are uncommon in the region, prompting discussions about preparedness for similar events. The USGS encourages residents to report their experiences on its “Did You Feel It?” platform.
