Monroe, NC – A trio of juvenile suspects has been charged in connection with two residential burglaries in Union County after deputies followed a trail of stolen jewelry to their location, according to the Union County Sheriff’s Office.

Late last week, deputies responded to a break-in on Twelve Mile Creek Road. When a second burglary occurred at the same residence days later, investigators were able to track a black Subaru that fled the scene. Working with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, deputies traced the vehicle to a residence in Charlotte.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, investigators located the Subaru and three juvenile males at the home. After a search warrant was obtained, deputies discovered a trail of jewelry starting near the driveway and continuing into nearby woods — a find that led to the suspects’ arrest.

Officials said the suspects, dubbed the “Breadcrumb Burglars,” allegedly stole a large amount of property, hiding some beneath leaves and more inside the residence. All three juveniles reportedly confessed to their involvement in both burglaries.

The Department of Juvenile Justice was contacted, though secure custody was denied, resulting in the juveniles being released back to their parents. The Sheriff’s Office says juvenile petitions will be filed against all three.
