Chicago, IL – As Memorial Day approaches this Monday, May 26, residents across the U.S. should expect a number of public institutions and businesses to adjust their hours or close entirely in observance of the federal holiday.

Memorial Day is a time to honor fallen service members, but it also brings changes to routine services. Government buildings, including courthouses, city halls, and local libraries, will be closed. Libraries, in particular, are a major closure across the country in various municipalities will not reopen until Tuesday. Public school districts will also shut their doors for the day.

According to the U.S. Postal Service, mail delivery will be suspended on Monday, and all post office locations will be closed. UPS will not conduct pickups or deliveries, and most UPS stores will also be closed.

Banks will be closed as the Federal Reserve observes the holiday, though ATMs and online banking services will remain available. The New York Stock Exchange will also suspend trading for the day.

Retailers, on the other hand, will largely remain open. Stores like Walmart, Target, and Kroger will operate under normal or adjusted hours, offering Memorial Day sales. However, Costco is one of the few major retail chains that will be closed on Memorial Day.

Most grocery stores, including Trader Joe’s, Aldi, Whole Foods, and H-E-B, are expected to be open, but customers are encouraged to check with local branches for specific hours.

If you have business to conduct at any government office—including the DMV, public libraries, or municipal buildings—it’s best to wait until Tuesday, as those services will be unavailable Monday statewide.
