Minneapolis–St. Paul, MN – A round of winter weather is set to move across the Twin Cities and much of Minnesota tonight as a cold front pushes west to east, bringing a brief period of freezing rain or wintry mix before changing over to snow.
According to the National Weather Service Twin Cities, precipitation is expected to begin this evening, with freezing rain or a wintry mix possible for a couple of hours at onset, especially across central and eastern Minnesota into western Wisconsin. As colder air deepens overnight, precipitation is forecast to transition to light snow.
While snowfall amounts are expected to remain generally light, the initial icy conditions could lead to slick roads, bridges, and overpasses, particularly during the evening and overnight travel period. Drivers are urged to use caution as conditions may change quickly.
Behind the cold front, breezy winds will develop late tonight and continue into Saturday, ushering in colder air. Saturday will feature decreasing clouds but gusty winds, with highs ranging from the upper teens to lower 30s, warmest across southern Minnesota.
Another chance for light snow is forecast late Sunday into early Monday, though significant accumulation is not expected at this time. Following that system, temperatures are expected to trend milder heading into next week, a welcome shift after the weekend chill.
Forecasters note that while winter weather impacts tonight should be limited in duration, even brief icing can create hazardous conditions. Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and road conditions, especially if traveling late tonight or early Saturday.
