Tulsa, OK – A surge of Arctic air moving into eastern Oklahoma is expected to bring dangerously cold conditions and potential travel impacts to the Tulsa area this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Tulsa, high confidence exists in very cold temperatures from Friday through Monday behind a strong Arctic cold front. Forecast guidance shows potential for subzero wind chills, especially overnight Saturday and Sunday.

Forecasters said the magnitude of the temperature drop may depend on how much winter precipitation occurs Friday into Saturday night, but even limited snowfall could increase the risk of roadway refreezing. Untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses may become slick as temperatures plunge well below freezing.

The National Weather Service cautioned that wind chills below zero can pose serious risks to anyone spending extended time outdoors, including commuters, utility workers, and those traveling overnight. Vehicles may also experience cold-related issues, particularly during the coldest overnight periods.

Drivers traveling on Interstate 44, U.S. Highway 75, and U.S. Highway 169 should be alert for icy patches, especially during early morning hours when refreeze is most likely.

While exact temperature values may change over the next few days, forecasters stressed that confidence is high in a prolonged period of bitter cold. Residents are encouraged to monitor forecast updates, dress in layers if outdoors, and ensure pets, pipes, and heating systems are protected.
