Cheyenne, WY – Residents across western Nebraska should brace for severe weather today, with thunderstorms bringing winds up to 80 mph and hail as large as 1 inch. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an Enhanced Severe Weather Risk for the Nebraska Panhandle, warning that storms will peak between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. This afternoon, thunderstorms are expected to hit areas along the I-25 corridor, gradually intensifying into the early evening.
According to the NWS, storms are expected to bring damaging winds, heavy rain, and brief periods of hail. Areas under the highest risk include Scottsbluff, Sidney, and Alliance, where gusts may exceed 75 mph. Residents are urged to stay indoors and secure loose objects outdoors as conditions could deteriorate rapidly. Flash flooding remains a possibility, especially in low-lying areas. Travelers should avoid the I-25 corridor between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Additionally, a partial lunar eclipse will begin at 7:41 p.m. and end by 11:47 p.m. However, cloud cover and ongoing storms may obstruct the view for much of the region. The moon will appear larger due to the coinciding supermoon, but residents in affected areas may have limited visibility depending on weather conditions. Check local forecasts for cloud cover updates as the evening progresses.
