Key West, FL – As Florida remains vigilant during the ongoing hurricane season, attention is now focused on a tropical wave located several hundred miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. This disturbance is currently producing widespread disorganized showers and thunderstorms. While development is expected to be slow over the next couple of days, conditions are forecast to become more conducive for tropical cyclone formation by early next week as the system moves westward across the central tropical Atlantic.
According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), the system could evolve into a tropical depression as it approaches the Lesser Antilles early next week. Following that, the disturbance is forecast to move generally west-northwestward, potentially affecting the Greater Antilles by mid-next week. The NHC currently places the chance of formation within the next 48 hours at 0%, but the probability increases to 50% over the next seven days.
This forecast is part of a highly active hurricane season, as reiterated by the updated NOAA Seasonal Outlook. Residents in Florida, especially in the Keys, are encouraged to review their hurricane preparedness plans as the disturbance continues to be monitored. Given the ongoing uncertainty regarding the system’s path and intensity, staying informed through official channels like the NHC and local weather services is crucial.
