Champaign, IL – A winter storm warning is in effect across central and southeast Illinois from midnight tonight through noon Monday. Heavy snow, with accumulations of 8 to 12 inches, is expected along and south of a Beardstown-to-Paris line, creating hazardous travel conditions for much of the region.

According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest snowfall will occur Sunday, with light freezing rain and sleet possible in areas south of I-70. Snowfall totals in other regions, including Fulton and Champaign counties, are estimated between 4 and 6 inches. Winds of up to 25 mph will further reduce visibility, complicating travel during the Monday morning commute.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and ensure vehicles are stocked with flashlights, food, and water in case of emergencies. The Illinois Department of Transportation recommends checking road conditions at Getting Around Illinois before heading out.

Sunday’s high in Champaign is forecast at 23°F, with conditions expected to remain overcast and windy. Snow will taper off by Monday afternoon, giving way to partly sunny skies with a high near 27°F. However, bitter cold persists into Tuesday, with overnight lows dipping into single digits and highs reaching only the low 20s.

Drivers should anticipate delays and icy patches on major roadways, including I-70 and routes near Lincoln, Danville, and Effingham. Use caution, especially in reduced visibility conditions, and stay updated on the latest forecasts and advisories throughout the storm.
