CARBONDALE, IL – Drivers in Southern Illinois are being urged to plan ahead as a significant portion of Interstate 57 will close Thursday, April 10, at 7 p.m. for emergency repairs. The closure will impact traffic between Exit 30 and Exit 45 in Williamson and Union counties, as crews perform urgent guardrail and pavement work.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), a posted detour will reroute southbound I-57 traffic to eastbound Interstate 24 just south of Marion. Northbound I-57 traffic will be directed to Illinois Route 146 at Exit 30. The department expects the repairs to be completed by 7 a.m. Friday, April 11, when all lanes will be reopened.

Motorists are advised to anticipate delays in the area and should consider alternative routes to avoid congestion. IDOT recommends that drivers pay close attention to flaggers and message boards in work zones, observe posted speed limits, and refrain from using mobile devices while traveling through the construction area.

For further updates, travelers are encouraged to check the IDOT District 9 social media platforms and IDOT’s traveler information map.
