Urbana, IL – Several roads surrounding Memorial Stadium will be closed Thursday for the Fighting Illini’s night game, impacting traffic flow ahead of Labor Day weekend.
Starting at 1 p.m., Kirby Avenue between First Street and Fourth Street, along with First Street between Irwin Drive and Kirby Avenue, will be closed. At 3 p.m., Peabody Drive between First and Fourth Streets will also close. By 4:30 p.m., additional closures include Kirby Avenue at Oak Street, Fourth Street between Kirby and Peabody Drive, and First Street between Stadium Drive and St. Mary’s Road.
According to the University of Illinois Police, these closures are necessary due to anticipated higher attendance at the game. Additional roads may also close as needed.
Drivers should plan alternative routes and expect delays throughout Thursday afternoon and evening. For game attendees, the university advises early arrival and awareness of these traffic adjustments to ensure a smooth experience.
These measures aim to enhance safety and accommodate the larger crowds expected during the long Labor Day weekend. For further details, visit the University of Illinois’ official traffic advisory page.
