Tornado Warning in Tazewell County: Storms Near Mackinaw Bringing 50 MPH Winds

Lincoln, IL – A tornado warning remains in effect for southeastern Tazewell County until 10:45 p.m. CDT as a severe storm system moves through the area.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, IL, at 10:25 p.m., a dangerous squall line capable of producing tornadoes and significant straight-line wind damage was located near Mackinaw, approximately nine miles southeast of Morton. The storm is moving northeast at 50 mph, bringing the potential for quarter-sized hail and strong winds.

Residents in the affected area, including those near Mackinaw and along Interstate 155 between mile markers 11 and 19, are urged to seek shelter immediately. The National Weather Service warns that flying debris poses a significant threat to those without proper shelter. Mobile homes may be severely damaged or destroyed, and damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles is likely.

Officials advise taking cover in a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Those outdoors, in vehicles, or in mobile homes should move to the nearest substantial shelter to avoid flying debris.
