Des Moines, IA – A significant weather event is expected across southwestern Iowa, southeastern Nebraska, and northwestern Missouri overnight into Thursday, with the potential for severe storms, including tornadoes. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings as a strong storm system moves through the region.
According to the NWS, thunderstorms will continue to develop and intensify this morning, particularly in western Iowa, bringing locally heavy rainfall. Some areas may experience two to four inches of rain, leading to localized flooding and hazardous travel conditions. The storms are expected to weaken slightly as they move eastward later this morning but could linger into the afternoon.
Additional severe storms are expected tonight, particularly in the southwestern sections of Iowa and adjacent areas. These storms could produce large hail, damaging winds, and additional heavy rain. The NWS notes that a few tornadoes are possible, especially during the late evening hours.
As the system progresses, the risk of severe weather will continue into Thursday, with a focus on the afternoon and evening hours. Temperatures will remain warm and humid, with highs in the 70s to low 80s today and mid-80s on Thursday, and overnight lows ranging from the mid-60s to lower 70s.
