Three Grade School-Age Children Among Four Killed in Fatal Crash at Illinois Camp

Chatham, IL – A tragic crash on Monday afternoon in Chatham, Illinois, resulted in the deaths of four people, including three grade school-age children. The incident occurred around 3:20 p.m. on April 28, 2025, when a vehicle, driven by 44-year-old Marianne Akers of Chatham, veered off the road and crashed into a building near the YNOT After School Camp on Breckenridge Road.

According to Illinois State Police (ISP), the crash claimed the lives of three children, ages 7, 8, and 18, along with one adult. Six other children were transported to hospitals, with one remaining in critical condition.

Akers, the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, was uninjured but taken to an area hospital for evaluation. Toxicology reports are pending as part of the ongoing investigation into the cause of the crash.

Local authorities, including the Chatham Police Department, Chatham Fire Department, and several other emergency responders, have been working on the scene. The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

ISP has expressed its heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and the Chatham community during this difficult time. No further details are available as the investigation continues.
