Kansas City, MO – A renewed wave of severe weather is set to impact Missouri beginning late Wednesday night, with large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rainfall expected to stretch through Friday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, thunderstorms will begin developing overnight Wednesday into early Thursday morning, primarily affecting the Kansas City metro and surrounding areas. The main threat during this initial round will be hail.

By Thursday evening, storms are expected to redevelop, with a conditional risk of becoming severe. Forecasters note a strong atmospheric “cap” could limit early development, but if storms break through, areas in northern Missouri and into southern Iowa, including St. Joseph and Maryville, could see the highest intensity, particularly in the form of hail and high winds.

Friday poses the most widespread risk, with a cold front pushing through the region during the afternoon and evening. Strong to severe storms are likely to accompany the front, bringing the threat of hail, damaging winds, and localized heavy rain to areas including Columbia, Warrensburg, and Butler.

Residents are advised to monitor local forecasts, have multiple ways to receive warnings, and review severe weather plans. Outdoor activities should be rescheduled where possible, especially Friday afternoon.
