Houston, TX – Texans are facing hazardous winter weather conditions, with snow, sleet, and freezing temperatures forecast to persist through Tuesday night. Roads across Houston and surrounding areas, including I-45 and I-10, have already become slick and icy, prompting officials to warn against nonessential travel.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for much of South Texas, including Houston, until 6 p.m. Tuesday. Heavy mixed precipitation is expected to add 2 to 4 inches of snow and sleet, with isolated areas possibly seeing greater accumulations. Gusty winds up to 40 mph could worsen travel conditions, particularly on bridges and overpasses.
Residents are urged to delay travel where possible, as icy patches are forming quickly due to falling temperatures, which have dipped as low as 25°F. For those who must drive, officials recommend reducing speeds, increasing stopping distances, and using extreme caution.
The cold will persist into Wednesday, with an Extreme Cold Watch predicting wind chill values as low as 10°F. Highs will reach only the low 40s, with partly cloudy skies offering minimal warmth. The chill will begin to ease Thursday when temperatures climb to 48°F. By Friday, a high of 52°F and sunny skies will mark the start of a warmer weekend.
Stay updated by monitoring weather alerts and taking precautions against hypothermia by dressing in layers and staying indoors whenever possible. Avoid road travel unless absolutely necessary.
