San Angelo, TX – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Abilene and San Angelo issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for parts of West Texas through 11 p.m. CST Thursday. This alert covers several counties, including Sweetwater, San Angelo, and Ozona.
According to the NWS, the storms may bring tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds. The watch area could experience hail up to two inches in diameter, posing a threat to vehicles and outdoor structures. Gusty winds reaching up to 70 mph are also likely, increasing the risk of power outages and downed trees.
Residents in the affected regions are advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Schools and hospitals are on alert as well, given the possibility of infrastructure damage. The NWS advises residents to keep their phones charged and follow weather updates.
Emergency services recommend residents review tornado safety procedures and locate the nearest shelters. Those in mobile homes should consider relocating to more secure structures until the storm threat passes.
This Severe Thunderstorm Watch affects approximately 350,000 residents, along with 260 schools and 21 hospitals across the region.
