Lubbock, TX – A Flood Watch and the risk of severe weather are in effect for Lubbock and the South Plains Monday night, as strong thunderstorms are expected to dump up to 3 inches of rain and trigger localized flooding.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, scattered storms will begin Monday afternoon, but intensify between 7 p.m. and 1 a.m. as severe thunderstorms sweep across the region. Rainfall rates will peak Monday night, with widespread totals between 1 and 2 inches and localized amounts of 3 inches. Gusts up to 60 mph and hail up to half-dollar size are also possible, especially in the far southwestern South Plains.
As rain continues into early Tuesday, roads—particularly poor drainage streets and low-lying areas—may become impassable. The Flood Watch remains in effect through 12 p.m. Tuesday, and drivers are urged to avoid low-water crossings and monitor changing road conditions during the morning commute.
