Amarillo, TX – A significant winter storm is set to impact the Texas Panhandle, bringing several inches of snow and hazardous travel conditions through Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, snowfall is expected to begin Friday night and intensify into Saturday. Forecast models indicate that areas such as Stratford, Dalhart, and Boise City could receive between 4 to 6 inches of snow, while Amarillo and surrounding regions may see 2 to 4 inches. A heavier snow band could develop, increasing the likelihood of localized totals exceeding 5 inches.

Travel is expected to become treacherous, with reduced visibility and icy road conditions. The NWS has warned that shifting snow bands may cause unpredictable accumulations, making travel planning difficult. Hazardous conditions are likely along major roadways, including Interstate 40.

Temperatures will hover around the freezing mark, with daytime highs in the low to mid-30s and overnight lows dropping into the 20s. Wind chills could make conditions feel even colder.

Residents are urged to prepare for winter weather by stocking up on essentials, avoiding unnecessary travel, and staying updated on weather alerts. Those who must drive should use caution, allow extra travel time, and check road conditions before departing.
