Houston, Texas – A rare and widespread winter weather setup is expected to impact large portions of Texas this weekend, bringing freezing rain to the Gulf Coast and South Texas while snow continues across the Panhandle and far northern counties.

According to the National Weather Service, Winter Weather Advisories are in effect from late Saturday night through Sunday for much of southeast Texas, including the Houston-Galveston metro, Brazoria County, Chambers County, and coastal communities along Galveston Bay. Ice accumulations up to one-tenth of an inch are possible, especially on bridges, overpasses, and elevated roadways, creating hazardous travel conditions.

Along the upper Texas coast, cities such as Galveston, Texas City, League City, Pearland, Freeport, and Bay City could see roads turn slick overnight as temperatures dip below freezing. Power outages are possible if ice builds on power lines, particularly in inland areas away from the immediate coastline.

Farther south, freezing rain is also expected across Maverick, Zavala, Frio, and Dimmit counties, impacting Eagle Pass, Carrizo Springs, Pearsall, and Crystal City through Sunday morning. Meanwhile, in the northern Panhandle and into far northwest Texas, including Dalhart and Hartley County, snow accumulations of 1 to 4 inches are expected to keep roads slick into early Sunday.

Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, slow down, and check conditions at DriveTexas.org or by calling 511. Wintry precipitation should taper later Sunday, but lingering ice and snow may continue to cause travel issues beyond the advisory period. Additional alerts remain possible as the system evolves.
