Lubbock, TX – Residents across the southern Texas Panhandle, South Plains, and Rolling Plains should prepare for extreme cold beginning Tuesday evening and lasting through Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, dangerously cold wind chills, possibly reaching as low as -12°F, are expected from Feb. 18 at 6 p.m. through Feb. 20 at noon. Cities including Lubbock, Plainview, Childress, and Brownfield will be affected, with temperatures posing serious health risks like hypothermia if proper precautions are not taken.

Officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, wear layered clothing, and ensure pets are sheltered. Heating systems should be checked, and pipes insulated to avoid freezing. The extreme cold may disrupt travel and daily routines, so staying informed on weather updates is critical.

This cold snap is unusual for the region, with temperatures far below seasonal averages. Residents are encouraged to monitor weather alerts for updates and follow safety guidelines to stay warm and safe.
