Amarillo, TX – A late-season snowstorm is expected to impact the Texas Panhandle this weekend, with the National Weather Service in Amarillo urging residents to prepare for winter-like conditions despite the calendar turning to April.
According to the US National Weather Service Amarillo, widespread rain is forecast to begin Friday before transitioning into snow late Friday night into Saturday. Snowfall could persist for 6 to 12 hours, with accumulation rates potentially leading to hazardous road conditions.
The main accumulation period is expected from 12 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, with areas such as Boise City, Guymon, and Stratford likely to receive at least 1 inch of snow, and some regions in the northwest Panhandle showing a 60-80% chance of reaching that threshold. More central locations, including Dalhart, Dumas, and Pampa, are in the 30-60% range, while areas to the southeast, such as Clarendon and Wellington, are projected to have a 10-30% chance.
Forecasters warn that snow accumulation on both grassy surfaces and roads could occur, especially if snowfall continues at a moderate rate for several hours. The impacts may include hazardous travel due to snow and ice on roadways and reduced visibility.
Despite being early April, officials stress that the weather system’s intensity could temporarily override warmer surface temperatures, especially during overnight hours, leading to icy conditions.
Residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates, limit travel during the accumulation period, and ensure vehicles are equipped for slick road conditions.
