Midland, Texas – Severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging wind gusts and large hail are expected to impact a wide swath of West Texas through 10 p.m. Thursday, prompting a Severe Thunderstorm Watch across 26 counties.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the watch includes counties from Brewster to Scurry and remains in effect until 10 p.m. CDT. Strong storm cells may develop rapidly this evening, with the potential for 60 mph winds and hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter. The primary threat zone includes Midland, Odessa, Andrews, and Pecos.

Motorists traveling on I-20, U.S. Highway 385, and State Highway 349 should prepare for sudden downpours, reduced visibility, and slick roads. Local emergency officials in Ector and Howard counties are advising residents to secure loose outdoor items and monitor local alerts.

Schools in the Lamb and Terry County areas have announced early dismissal due to deteriorating weather conditions. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and have a backup way to receive warnings in case of power outages.

This is the first widespread severe weather alert for the region this spring. Additional watches or warnings may be issued later tonight as storms continue to move eastward.
