Amarillo, Texas – Sweltering heat is gripping the Texas Panhandle this weekend, with daytime highs soaring into the mid-90s and isolated thunderstorms threatening brief disruptions through Sunday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, there’s a 10 percent chance of afternoon storms today and again tonight, with gusty south-southeast winds approaching 20 mph. Sunday will stay dry and sunny with a high near 95°F, but humid air and breezy conditions could make outdoor activities uncomfortable, especially in open areas like I-40 or near Palo Duro Canyon.
Cities across the Panhandle, including Bushland and Canyon, will see elevated fire weather risks due to dry conditions and wind gusts through early next week. While major rainfall is not expected, localized lightning could increase fire concerns in grassland areas.
Residents should stay hydrated, limit strenuous activity during peak sun hours, and ensure pets and vulnerable neighbors are safe from prolonged heat exposure.
This pattern of 90s heat with slight rain chances will persist into midweek, with another minor storm chance returning Thursday.
⚠️ Warnings remain minimal, but additional heat advisories could be issued if humidity increases.
