Lubbock, Texas – Baseball-sized hail, 70 mph winds, and a possible tornado could strike West Texas on Wednesday, putting Lubbock and surrounding towns at risk during the afternoon and evening hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, a strong line of thunderstorms is expected to develop Wednesday, April 23, with a Level 3 Enhanced Risk across the South Plains. Areas including Morton, Plainview, Post, and Littlefield fall within the elevated threat zone, where severe hail and damaging gusts are likely. Tornado development is also possible, especially as storms intensify late in the day.
Motorists are urged to avoid unnecessary travel after 3 p.m., especially along U.S. Route 84 and Interstate 27, where reduced visibility and road debris could pose hazards. Residents should secure outdoor items, monitor NOAA weather radios, and ensure mobile alerts are activated in case of emergency warnings.
This system could produce heavy rainfall, raising the potential for localized flash flooding. The severe threat will diminish overnight but may return later in the week.
Additional watches or warnings are possible as the storm evolves. Stay weather-aware through Wednesday night.
