Austin, TX – Record-breaking heat and dangerous fire conditions are gripping Central Texas today, prompting urgent warnings for Hill Country residents. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Red Flag Warning, effective from noon to 6 p.m., as temperatures soar into the mid-80s and humidity drops to dangerously low levels.

According to the NWS, northwest winds of 10-20 mph and humidity in the teens are creating extreme fire danger, particularly in areas along U.S. Highway 290 and near the Edwards Plateau. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and secure flammable materials to reduce the risk of wildfires.

Tuesday will bring cooler conditions, with highs around 66 degrees and winds calming to 5-10 mph. New Year’s Day is expected to be sunny with a high near 61, offering relief from the heat. By midweek, mostly cloudy skies will develop, with highs in the low 60s and lows dipping into the 40s.

For the extended outlook, Thursday and Friday will remain partly sunny, with daytime highs in the mid-60s and overnight lows in the mid-40s. Weekend temperatures will climb again, with highs reaching the mid-70s by Saturday and Sunday, but conditions should remain dry and mild.

Stay informed of any changes to fire danger levels and plan outdoor activities with the week’s weather in mind. For real-time updates, visit the NWS website or tune into local news.
