Rain Continues Across Central Illinois Tonight, Snow Possible Northwest by New Year’s Eve

Springfield, IL – Rain will return Monday evening across central and southeast Illinois, creating potentially hazardous conditions for commuters. Drivers are advised to watch for patchy fog and wet roads, particularly along I-55 and I-74. Temperatures remain mild through Tuesday before significant cooling arrives midweek.

According to the National Weather Service, rain is likely to persist through Tuesday, with an additional quarter to three-quarters of an inch expected. Northwest of Peoria, a mix of rain and snow is possible Tuesday, though little accumulation is anticipated. Wind gusts up to 32 mph may make travel challenging.

By New Year’s Day, drier but colder weather will dominate. Expect highs near 31°F with partly sunny skies. Temperatures drop significantly Thursday evening, with lows between 16°F and 18°F. A light snow chance may develop Thursday afternoon, potentially leaving less than an inch of accumulation.

Looking ahead, Friday offers relief with mostly sunny skies and highs in the mid-20s to low 30s. Residents should prepare for frigid overnight lows, reaching 10°F in some areas.
