Austin, TX – Critical fire weather conditions are expected to impact South Central Texas this afternoon and evening. A Red Flag Warning has been issued for areas including the Rio Grande, southern Edwards Plateau, and the Hill Country. The warning is in effect from 1 PM to 10 PM CDT today.

Breezy southerly winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph, will combine with low humidity levels, ranging from 10 to 25 percent, to create the dangerous conditions. Temperatures are expected to reach between 89°F and 100°F, further contributing to the risk.

According to the National Weather Service, these conditions are conducive to rapid fire growth. Any fires that develop are likely to spread quickly, making them difficult to contain. Residents in affected areas are urged to avoid outdoor burning and take extra precautions to protect homes and properties.

These warnings are not limited to Texas. A similar Red Flag Warning remains in effect for parts of New Mexico, where winds could gust up to 40 mph and relative humidity could dip as low as 4 percent in some areas. Residents across both states are advised to stay vigilant as dry, windy conditions continue into the evening.
