Amarillo, TX – Strong winds sweeping across the Texas Panhandle today are creating hazardous travel and increasing wildfire risks. Gusts of up to 35 mph are forecast along U.S. Route 87 and surrounding areas from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., prompting a Red Flag Warning.

According to the National Weather Service, northwesterly winds will cause blowing dust, reducing visibility and creating dangerous driving conditions, especially in the Oklahoma Panhandle. Outdoor burning is discouraged due to the elevated wildfire risks. Travelers are urged to secure loose objects and monitor updates for potential road closures.

Temperatures today will reach a high of 68°F under sunny skies. Winds will remain breezy tonight, dropping to 10-15 mph as temperatures dip to 30°F.

Looking ahead, Tuesday brings cooler conditions with a high near 47°F and lighter winds in the afternoon. Wind chill values early in the day will hover near 22°F, making outdoor plans chilly but manageable. New Year’s Eve night will remain clear, with lows around 25°F.

Sunny skies dominate the extended forecast, with highs in the mid-50s by Thursday and Friday. Winds will calm significantly, creating a pleasant start to 2025. Residents should remain cautious today but can look forward to milder weather as the week progresses.
