Lubbock, TX – Residents across Lubbock and surrounding areas face critical fire weather and wind conditions today, prompting multiple safety alerts. A Red Flag Warning is active until 8 p.m., paired with a Wind Advisory through 6 p.m. for Parmer and Bailey counties. Gusty winds and dry conditions increase fire risks significantly.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), wind speeds of 20 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph, are expected throughout Monday. Unseasonably warm temperatures and low humidity create conditions for rapid fire spread in areas with dry vegetation. Residents are urged to avoid any activities that could spark fires, such as outdoor grilling or burning yard waste.

Travelers should remain cautious, especially along open roadways where high winds may reduce visibility due to blowing dust. High-risk areas include U.S. 84 and FM 54 in affected counties. Secure outdoor items like trash bins or decorations to prevent them from being carried by strong winds.

Looking ahead, Tuesday (New Year’s Eve) will bring sunny skies with cooler highs around 53°F and lighter winds shifting from the north. New Year’s Day is expected to be mild with highs near 61°F, followed by a sunny, calm Thursday and Friday.

Residents should monitor updates from NWS for further advisories. Stay vigilant about fire prevention and prioritize safety throughout this alert period.
