Amarillo, TX – An unseasonably intense heatwave is sweeping across the Texas Panhandle, with Sunday temperatures climbing 15°F to 25°F above April averages and approaching historic highs in multiple cities.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, forecast highs for April 13 include 90°F in Amarillo, 94°F in Borger, and 91°F in Dalhart—all nearing or matching record temperatures set in 2006. Meteorologists say the region is experiencing August-like conditions, an anomaly for mid-spring.

The heat poses health risks for residents unaccustomed to summer-like temperatures this early in the year. The NWS urges caution for those spending time outdoors, particularly between late morning and early evening hours. Hydration, breaks in shaded areas, and limiting strenuous activities during peak heat are recommended.

Cities across the Panhandle—ranging from Perryton and Dumas to Hereford and Wellington—are all expected to see highs in the upper 80s to low 90s. This weather surge contrasts sharply with average April highs in the upper 60s to low 70s.

Relief is on the horizon as forecasters anticipate a return to more seasonable temperatures beginning Monday. Until then, residents are advised to stay alert to potential heat-related illnesses and follow local safety guidelines.
