Amarillo, TX — Dense fog across the Texas Panhandle is reducing visibility this morning, creating hazardous conditions for drivers along I-40 and surrounding areas. Visibility has dropped below one-quarter of a mile in some spots, especially near Pampa and Wellington, prompting officials to urge caution during commutes. The National Weather Service (NWS) has warned that the fog could persist through mid-morning, leading to potential travel delays and increased risks on the roads.

According to the National Weather Service, fog is expected to linger until 9 a.m. today, with freezing drizzle possible in northern areas. Drivers are advised to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and allow extra time for travel. Reduced visibility is most severe in the eastern Panhandle, including areas such as Canadian and Palo Duro Canyon.

Looking ahead, conditions are expected to improve later today, with highs reaching 55°F under increasing clouds. Tonight will bring mostly cloudy skies and lows around 36°F. On Tuesday, patchy fog may return early in the morning, but sunshine is anticipated by the afternoon with highs climbing to 56°F.

For those planning holiday travel, Christmas Day promises clear skies and a high near 58°F, making it a welcome break from foggy conditions. However, showers could reappear Wednesday night and Thursday, bringing a 40% chance of rain. By Friday and Saturday, sunny skies will dominate, with weekend highs nearing 60°F.

Stay alert for updated advisories throughout the week, especially if traveling during foggy or rainy conditions.
