Amarillo, Texas – Drivers in the Texas Panhandle should prepare for storms and wind gusts up to 30 mph starting Wednesday night as a storm system moves through the region. The National Weather Service warns that scattered thunderstorms, some possibly severe, could linger through Saturday morning, with the highest risk between Thursday and Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the strongest activity is expected Thursday afternoon into Friday morning, when thunderstorm chances climb to 70% and gusts may top 30 mph. Spotty downpours and brief severe storms are possible, especially near highways like U.S. 87 and I-40. While widespread damage is not anticipated, conditions could quickly change. Be ready for rapidly reduced visibility and slick roads.

On Wednesday, Amarillo will remain mostly sunny with a high near 78°F before clouds increase in the evening. Showers become likely overnight, continuing into Thursday with another high in the upper 70s. Rain chances stay elevated through Friday before tapering off into the weekend.

What You Should Do:
Secure loose outdoor items, charge electronics, and monitor local alerts. Non-essential travel during peak storm hours should be limited, especially on rural highways where lightning and winds pose higher risks.
