Amarillo, Texas – Damaging winds and heavy rain could sweep across the Texas Panhandle from 3 to 11 p.m. Monday as a line of severe thunderstorms threatens to disrupt travel and trigger localized flooding.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, storm development will be scattered and disorganized, making precise timing difficult. However, storms are most likely to intensify this afternoon and evening, moving from the south-southwest toward the north-northeast. Affected areas include Amarillo, Borger, Pampa, and Dumas.

Gusts could top 60 mph, with hail up to one inch in diameter. Rainfall rates may reach 1.5 inches per hour, especially in parts of the western Panhandle like Dalhart and Vega, which face a 15–30% risk of flash flooding. Areas farther east, including Canadian and Clarendon, carry a 5–15% chance.

Drivers should watch for ponding on roads and reduced visibility during downpours. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid flooded low-water crossings, and monitor alerts through local media or weather apps.

Storm chances and flood risks remain elevated through Tuesday evening as a stagnant pattern keeps fueling afternoon thunderstorms.
