Amarillo, TX – Strong wind gusts up to 35 mph are already building across the Texas Panhandle this afternoon, creating hazardous travel conditions on major east-west routes like I-40 through at least 9 p.m. Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, sustained winds of 20 to 25 mph with peak gusts between 30 and 35 mph will impact cities including Amarillo, Borger, Pampa, Dumas, and Guymon through the evening hours. The strongest gusts are expected between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m., when loose objects may be blown into roadways and high-profile vehicles face difficult driving conditions.
High temperatures will climb into the upper 70s to near 80 degrees across the region, including 79° in Boise City, 80° in Guymon, and 77° in Amarillo. While most areas stay dry, a 10 to 20 percent chance of isolated showers or thunderstorms could develop from Vega to Clarendon and southward into the early evening. Any storm that forms may produce brief lightning and sudden wind gusts exceeding 35 mph.
Drivers, especially those in trucks or towing trailers, should use caution on open highways where crosswinds will be strongest. Secure outdoor items and avoid parking near unsecured debris.
Winds will gradually ease after 9 p.m., but updates are expected later today if storm coverage increases across the southern Panhandle.
