Midland, Texas – A tornado watch is in effect until 9 p.m. Monday for large portions of West Texas and southeastern New Mexico, with severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Tornado Watch 227 includes 11 counties in Texas—among them Midland, Ector, Andrews, and Crane—and five in New Mexico, including Lea, Eddy, and Chaves. The watch was issued at 3:25 p.m. CDT and urges residents to stay alert for rapidly changing conditions and potential tornado warnings.
In Texas, cities such as Odessa, Midland, and Kermit could see fast-moving supercells through early evening. Roadways like U.S. 385, I-20, and State Highway 18 may become dangerous due to low visibility and sudden wind shifts. New Mexico communities including Hobbs and Artesia are also at risk for rotating storms capable of brief tornadoes and golf ball-sized hail.
Emergency officials advise keeping mobile devices charged, securing outdoor items, and identifying shelter locations in case a warning is issued. If a tornado warning is triggered, take cover immediately in a basement or interior room away from windows.
The tornado watch remains in effect until 9 p.m., and additional watches or warnings may be issued as storms develop.
