Amarillo, TX – A heatwave is sweeping across the Texas Panhandle today, with Amarillo expected to reach a scorching 96°F. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued heat advisories for the region, urging residents to stay indoors, hydrate frequently, and take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned spaces.
According to the NWS in Amarillo, the high temperatures will push into the low-100s in surrounding areas such as Borger (102°F) and Palo Duro Canyon (104°F). Record-breaking heat is also forecast for Dalhart at 101°F, intensifying risks for heat-related illnesses.
In the coming days, temperatures are expected to remain elevated, with Sunday projected to hit 93°F and early next week seeing highs around 90°F. Residents should continue to practice heat safety and avoid outdoor activities during peak sunlight hours.
As the heat persists, NWS recommends checking on elderly family members, ensuring pets have access to shade and water, and never leaving children or animals unattended in vehicles. Stay alert for any updates on potential cooling stations.
