Amarillo, Texas – Drivers in southeast Texas Panhandle towns like Clarendon and Wheeler could face dangerous flash flooding through 3 a.m. Wednesday as repeated thunderstorms unload heavy rainfall across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, storms capable of producing 1–2 inches of rain per hour are expected to develop between 8 p.m. Tuesday and 3 a.m. Wednesday, with the threat of flooding lingering until around 5 a.m. Areas from Pampa to Wellington face a 15–40% chance of flash flooding within 25 miles.
Localized hail and frequent lightning are also possible. Reduced visibility and ponding on roads may make overnight travel hazardous, especially in low-lying areas along U.S. Route 287 and smaller county roads. Residents are urged to avoid driving through flooded streets and to monitor alerts from local emergency management.
The risk is amplified by saturated soil from recent rains, which limits drainage and raises the odds of rapid water accumulation.
Conditions should improve after sunrise, but flood warnings may be extended depending on overnight totals and storm behavior. Drivers should stay weather-aware and expect updates overnight.
