Amarillo, TX – Residents of the Texas Panhandle are urged to prepare for extreme cold and light snow showers expected through Tuesday. A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. Monday, with an Extreme Cold Watch taking over Monday night, when wind chills could plunge to as low as -11°F.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), light snow flurries may accumulate up to two inches in some areas, making roadways, including Interstate 40 and surrounding highways, slick and hazardous. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, dress in layers, and take precautions to prevent frostbite and hypothermia.
Temperatures Monday night are expected to dip to 5°F, with winds from the north-northeast reaching up to 15 mph. Snow showers will clear by Tuesday morning, giving way to sunny skies and a high of 36°F. However, wind chills will remain between -7°F and 3°F, keeping conditions bitterly cold.
Looking ahead, temperatures will begin to moderate midweek. Wednesday and Thursday will bring sunny skies with highs reaching the mid-40s. Overnight lows, however, will linger in the low 20s, with gusts of up to 25 mph. By Friday, the Panhandle could see highs near 56°F, a welcome reprieve from the frigid start to the week.
Residents are encouraged to check on vulnerable neighbors, keep pets indoors, and ensure portable heaters are used safely to prevent fire risks.
