Guadalupe Mountains, TX – A High Wind Warning and Blowing Dust Advisory have been issued for areas along the Texas-New Mexico border today, with hazardous weather expected to persist through midnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Midland/Odessa, the High Wind Warning is in effect from 1 p.m. CDT Wednesday through 1 a.m. CDT Thursday. The affected areas include the Guadalupe Mountains of Eddy County in New Mexico and the Guadalupe and Delaware Mountains in West Texas, including Pine Springs, Queen, and Guadalupe Mountains National Park.

Forecasters expect sustained west winds of 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 60 mph. A separate Blowing Dust Advisory is also in effect from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. CDT today, with visibility potentially dropping to between one-quarter and one mile due to blowing dust.

The conditions are likely to result in hazardous travel, especially for high-profile vehicles such as tractor-trailers, campers, and vans. Turbulence near mountainous regions may also pose serious risks for low-flying light aircraft.

Residents with respiratory issues are urged to remain indoors during periods of reduced air quality. Drivers are advised to avoid travel if possible, especially in elevated regions where wind speeds will be strongest. If caught in a dust storm, officials recommend pulling off the road completely, turning off vehicle lights, and keeping your foot off the brake to avoid being rear-ended.

The weather service warns that strong winds and low visibility could create life-threatening situations for those unprepared.
