Guadalupe Mountains, TX – A heightened fire danger has prompted a Red Flag Warning for areas along the Texas-New Mexico border today, with forecasters warning of critical wildfire conditions through midnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Midland/Odessa, the Red Flag Warning is in effect from 1 p.m. CDT Wednesday through 1 a.m. CDT Thursday. The affected zone includes the Guadalupe Mountains of Eddy County in New Mexico and the Guadalupe and Delaware Mountains of West Texas, including Pine Springs, Queen, and Guadalupe Mountains National Park.
Forecasters report west winds sustained between 35 and 45 mph with gusts reaching 60 mph. These strong winds, combined with very low humidity levels and dry vegetation, create a volatile environment for rapid wildfire ignition and spread.
Officials warn that any fire that starts could grow quickly and become uncontrollable, especially in rugged terrain. Residents and visitors are strongly urged to avoid outdoor burning and activities that may generate sparks or open flames.
The fire risk is compounded by a Blowing Dust Advisory, also in effect from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. CDT today, which may reduce visibility to as low as one-quarter mile in open areas.
Travelers are advised to exercise extreme caution, especially those driving high-profile vehicles. Campers and hikers should stay alert to changing conditions and avoid areas prone to wildfire activity.
Emergency services remain on standby, and officials urge the public to report any signs of smoke or fire immediately.
