Lubbock, TX – A dense fog advisory is in effect for Childress, Cottle, and King counties until 9 a.m. today, significantly impacting visibility along major routes such as US 287. Motorists should prepare for reduced visibility below a quarter mile in some areas and exercise extreme caution while traveling this morning.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Lubbock, dense fog began forming overnight, creating hazardous conditions for post-Christmas travelers. Drivers are urged to use low-beam headlights, maintain a safe distance, and allow additional time for commutes. The advisory highlights particular risks on rural and high-speed roadways, where sudden visibility loss could lead to accidents.
Beyond today’s fog, sunny skies will return to the region, with temperatures reaching 68°F in Lubbock by the afternoon. Saturday and Sunday will also bring clear skies, with highs climbing into the mid-70s by the start of the workweek. However, these warming trends may increase wildfire risks on Monday as dry, windy conditions develop across the Caprock region.
The upcoming five-day forecast predicts continued sunny weather into New Year’s Day. Highs will drop to the low 50s on Tuesday, offering cooler conditions for the holiday. While no rain is expected in the coming week, residents should remain vigilant for elevated fire warnings early next week.
Travelers are encouraged to check road conditions and local weather updates before heading out. Stay informed and drive carefully as fog dissipates later this morning.
