San Angelo, TX – A dangerous dust storm is sweeping through the Concho Valley, bringing strong winds and near-zero visibility to several Texas counties. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Dust Storm Warning until 5 PM CDT Wednesday, urging residents to stay off the roads due to life-threatening travel conditions.

According to the NWS Abilene/San Angelo, wind speeds of 45-50 mph are kicking up dust, drastically reducing visibility in cities including San Angelo, Ballinger, Robert Lee, and Sterling City. Highways US-277, US-67, and US-83 are affected, with potential risks for over 135,000 residents.

Officials warn drivers to avoid travel if possible, as blowing dust can cause sudden whiteout conditions. Those caught in the storm should pull over, turn off their lights, and set the parking brake until conditions improve.

Dust storms of this magnitude are common in West Texas, where dry conditions and strong winds create hazardous driving environments. Residents are advised to monitor NWS updates and take necessary precautions as the storm moves through the region.
