CONROE, Texas — As Black Friday shopping ramps up across Montgomery County, local deputies are reminding residents to stay alert, secure their belongings, and shop smart — both in stores and online.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said its top priority is protecting shoppers from theft and scams during the busiest retail weekend of the year.

Deputies are urging residents not to leave valuables visible in their vehicles. Bags, electronics, and personal items should be locked in the trunk before leaving a store or parking area. Officers also advise parking in well-lit areas and staying aware of surroundings, particularly near ATMs and crowded lots.

Shoppers are encouraged to keep purses and wallets close to their body and never unattended in carts or on chairs. “Be mindful of distractions — phones down, eyes up,” officials said.

For those shopping online, deputies recommend sticking to trusted, secure websites marked by “https://” in the URL and the padlock symbol. Residents should avoid clicking on email or text links promising unrealistic discounts.

Using credit cards instead of debit cards offers better fraud protection, and checking statements frequently can help detect unauthorized charges quickly.

“Whether you’re out early hunting deals or shopping from home, we want everyone to enjoy a safe and stress-free Black Friday,” the sheriff’s office said.

Anyone who notices suspicious activity is encouraged to report it to law enforcement immediately.
