Morristown, TN – Black ice and snow-covered roads are causing treacherous travel conditions across parts of East Tennessee and surrounding regions Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Morristown, black ice and icy roads, especially on secondary streets, have created significant hazards. These conditions are expected to persist into Sunday night, with temperatures remaining below freezing in many areas. Motorists are advised to drive cautiously and avoid unnecessary travel.
Snowfall accumulation overnight added to the already icy conditions, with some areas receiving 2–4 inches. Local authorities and transportation crews are working to treat main roads, but secondary routes remain especially slick. This has led to multiple vehicle incidents throughout the region, particularly in areas with steep terrain.
The hazardous weather affects portions of East Tennessee, including Knox, Sullivan, and Sevier counties, along with parts of southwest Virginia and western North Carolina. NWS also warns of lingering ice in shaded areas and bridges where conditions can worsen quickly.
Forecasters indicate that conditions will gradually improve Monday as temperatures rise. However, untreated roads may remain icy until the early afternoon.
Residents are urged to monitor weather updates and check road conditions before heading out. Public safety officials recommend having emergency supplies, such as blankets, water, and flashlights, in vehicles if travel is unavoidable.
No additional winter weather is expected in the coming week, according to the NWS. Still, officials emphasize the importance of vigilance during this period of lingering hazards.
