Memphis, Tenn. – Severe thunderstorms are expected to sweep through the Memphis area Tuesday afternoon, bringing wind gusts near 30 mph and heavy rain just in time for the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, storms will begin developing around 4 p.m., with an 80% chance of thunderstorms, some potentially severe, especially near major roads like I-240, U.S. 78, and I-55. The strongest cells could dump up to an inch of rain, with localized flooding possible in low-lying spots.

Wind gusts from the south could hit 30 mph, especially during heavier downpours. If you’re traveling after 3 p.m., keep your headlights on and avoid underpasses that may collect runoff. Southbound lanes on I-240 and exit ramps near Whitehaven and Parkway Village may be especially slick.

By Tuesday night, the storm system moves east, bringing clearer skies and a cooler low around 61°F. Wednesday will offer a reprieve, with sunny conditions and a high near 82°F. A slight chance of showers may return briefly Wednesday night.

Looking ahead, Thursday and Friday appear dry and sunny, with highs in the mid to upper 70s — classic late-May summer weather. Another round of scattered thunderstorms could return by Friday night into Saturday, with 40% rain chances continuing into Memorial Day.

Bottom line: Stay weather-aware through Tuesday night, especially during rush hour. Strong storms today — sun returns midweek. More alerts may follow before the holiday weekend.
