Memphis, Tennessee – Roads across West Tennessee and North Mississippi could become nearly impassable beginning Friday evening as a dangerous ice storm spreads across the Mid-South, bringing the threat of widespread power outages, extensive tree damage, and prolonged travel disruptions through Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, an Ice Storm Warning is in effect from Friday evening through Sunday evening for much of North Mississippi and West Tennessee. Ice accumulations between one-half inch and one inch are expected, along with 1 to 3 inches of snow and sleet. Areas including Memphis, Tupelo, Oxford, Corinth, New Albany, Senatobia, Batesville, and Bolivar are likely to see rapidly worsening conditions as freezing rain intensifies.
The weight of ice on trees and power lines may lead to power outages lasting more than a day in some communities. Major routes such as I-40, I-55, U.S. 78, and U.S. 45 could become slick and hazardous, especially on bridges and overpasses. Travel during the Friday evening commute is expected to deteriorate quickly.
Farther east, parts of Middle Tennessee including Lawrenceburg, Hohenwald, Waynesboro, and Linden are also under an Ice Storm Warning from late Friday night through Sunday. Ice accumulations up to one-half inch could bring additional outages and make rural roads impassable.
Emergency officials urge residents to complete preparations early, restrict travel to emergencies only, and prepare for extended power disruptions. Ice Storm Warnings remain in effect through Sunday, and additional advisories may follow as conditions evolve.
