Memphis, TN – A tornado watch is in effect for 20 counties across West Tennessee, including Memphis and Jackson, until 7 p.m. Saturday, as severe weather conditions develop across the region.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Tornado Watch 122 was issued at 9:55 a.m. CDT and includes Shelby, Madison, Dyer, Gibson, and Fayette counties among others. The alert warns of the potential for tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds throughout the afternoon and early evening hours.

Residents in affected counties — including Tipton, Lauderdale, Hardeman, and McNairy — are urged to monitor local weather alerts and have a safe shelter location ready in case warnings are issued. The storm system is moving rapidly and may impact travel and outdoor events.

The watch spans both urban and rural communities, stretching from the Mississippi River east toward the Tennessee River Valley. April often brings heightened tornado risks in this area, and officials encourage residents to remain weather-aware.

Preparedness tips include charging mobile devices, securing outdoor items, and avoiding travel during storms. Updates will continue throughout the day from the NWS and local emergency management agencies.
